“I took a picture earlier today of five young Karamojong girls, probably a decade younger than me, standing arm in arm. Their clothes are incredibly bright and beautiful and against their skin, look magnificent. But I found myself more intrigued by their intense gaze and stoic posture, that I interpret, perhaps out of ignorance, as pride. They stare at me. Through me, rather.” -journal entry, June 28th, 20. Kabong, Uganda
The nine portraits included in “East Africa,” were shot over a three-month period in various parts of Northern Uganda and in Lamu, Kenya, a small island on the Indian Ocean. The pieces are chromogenic prints mounted on 1/8” gatorboard backing with a laminate finish. They measure 16” x 16.”

Featuring art by Hannah Fierman, Jacob Murphy, Eric White, Pamela Aucoin, and Tania Nunez.
Hannah Fierman
The “Fish Market” painting series was inspired by the natural fluidity
and diverse forms of the angler fish. Angler fish in particular have character that otherwise can only be found in human faces, hence the inspiration of the anthropomorphic designs. Fierman expresses themes such as “beauty in the grotesque,” a sense of dark humor/horror as well as whimsically mocking the organic repulsiveness that unites everyone in the human predicament. Many of the mats and backdrops are newspapers collected by the artist during her travels to Kuwait city, Tokyo, Luanda Angola, the United States, Frankfurt, Tbilisi Georgia, Rota Spain and Catania Sicily to name a few.
This work is mix-media collection of oil as well as acrylic paint,
pencil and charcoal on dried processed hard-wood, as well as processed paper board and canvas.

Jacob Murphy
Jacob Murphy aims to take pictures that straddle the line between journalism and art; gravitating to people for subject matter.

Eric White
“This project seeks to break down natural forms into their most simple components. I want to isolate these forms from all else, so that they are describable only in terms of their most basic, intrinsic elements. In doing this, I seek to evoke a sense of the invisible space in which these things occupy.” -Eric White

Pamela Aucoin
Do western cities share a common landscape? Images from Berlin, Montreal, and New York City are presented, as a means to explore what does – and doesn’t – distinguish different urban centers.
Tania Nunez

1. why coffee? thanks to my grandmother since the young age of 7 I became addicted to it and have never stopped drinking it since.
2. I am fascinated by the idea of combining opposites: tension (the string) + calmness (the pencil drawing) in the same piece of paper.
3. In our lives there is always some kind of addiction we have: mine is coffee. For me to use coffee as the medium for the ground on which I work with is a statement on living somewhere between these two forces or moving from one extreme to the other.
4. I seek to draw women as beautiful and/or fashionable because the idea of what is beauty today and why we are attracted to it is important to me as another tool for my work.
5. Do you want a cup of coffee? Yes please, with 3 tsp of sugar.

In modern times, mbira music is played on guitars and other instruments and used as the basis of pop songs, but its spiritual power remains. MbiraNY plays the traditional songs that have been handed down through scores of generations as given to us by the master mbira players of Zimbabwe.

SUNDAY, December 7, 12-6pm – Introduction to Alternative Water-Based Silkscreen Techniques
in the basement
This beginning workshop will introduce you to various alternative screen-printing techniques, including hand-painted screens, handmade stencils, and multi-color printing. Demonstrations will include screen stretching and preparation, mark-making tools, color mixing, and screen cleaning (fun!). Silkscreen is one of the simplest and most flexible printmaking methods. You can experiment with printing on paper, fabric and other materials. Whether you are looking to start your own screen-printing studio, or just want to have some fun, this class will above all be interest-oriented, with a focus on enabling each participant to realize her or his individual creative goals for the day. This class is a great opportunity to make those holiday cards you’ve been procrastinating on… Everyone will leave at the end of the day with some finished single-color prints.
////
This workshop will be taught by Jen Harris. Jen studied Art at Yale University, Queens College (CUNY) and in Italy, at the International School of Art in Umbria. She has lived, worked, exhibited and taught in New York, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Italy and India, among other places. She makes paintings and time-based works Jen P. Harris and runs a small hand-printed silkscreen business Black Sheep Heap in Brooklyn, New York.

SATURDAY, August 23, 7-9pm – Melissa Bastian’s Anywhere I Lay My Head zine release
at 1 Bleecker & Bowery
“Anywhere I lay my head” recounts author Melissa Bastian’s experience with Hurricane Katrina and the ways in which she rebuilt her life and dealt with the ramifications of the disaster. The artist will be present for the full extent of the event to answer questions and discuss the work,
and will be doing a short reading at 8pm. Paintings and photographs of the New Orleans area will be on display that correlate with the context of the work. Also on display will be personal items such as Ms. Bastian’s scrap book of newspaper clippings and her photographs from her first visits back to the city. The event has been intentionally scheduled to fall just six days before the third anniversary of Katrina; the artist hopes to remind people of the storm and to bring attention to the fact that while enormous progress has been made, many people and parts of the city are still struggling. 25% of any revenue generated from zine or artwork sales will be donated to the Common Ground Collective in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans.
